How You Can Survive the Global Economic Situation As A Massage Therapist:

I’ve put together some helpful ways to succeed in this new economy:

1. Be open to recreating yourself

A lot of Therapists I’ve spoken to recently have a tendency to feel stagnant. They feel this way because they have not refined the vision for themselves to be in a different situation. An extreme case of this is when someone stays in the same job or company for such a long time as then gets retrenched. People in this situation can have a hard time refocusing and redefining their skills and abilities to suit their new, potentially exciting situation.  Even with suggestions of what they can do to lead a rich and fulfilling new direction they still remain stuck in the old ways of doing things. Don’t think that just because we are Massage Therapists we do not suffer from this same mental affliction as people in this situation.

I always say that with every change brings opportunity for growth and new, positive experiences. In this economic climate, you may have the opportunity to tap into other markets that you may previously not have though of. Start looking at new opportunities around you. Stepping out of your comfort zone is EXACTLY what is needed to take you to a place were you can succeed with confidence.

2. Spend time with other like minded souls.

You’ve probably heard of the term “Group Consciousness”, were we make very similar decisions based on the people we spend the most time with.

You probably know what I am going to say. Those people influence you greatly in decision making and where you focus your energy. The best way to determine if the people you spend the most time with are going to encourage you to success is by asking yourself

“Are the people I spend the most time with geared for successful and positive thinking for the long term?” If they’re not, you’ll most likely find that they are quite reactive to immediate influences. If this is indeed the case, then it’s time for you to align yourself with a group of people who take full responsibility for their own success.

3. Marketing ability is one of the most important “must-have” massage business skills in any economy

If you can learn to market your massage business effectively, you’ll always the number of clients you need. Marketing is a fundamental skill that will always be very much needed in ANY economic conditions. There are large groups of people who are looking to have their back, neck and shoulders free of pain and they can’t massage themselves! People with ongoing problems who get relief from massage won’t stop getting relief just because the economy “has gone bad”. Remember that.

Your ability to find that client and create enough trust to prove that you care about helping them, is what will set you apart from every other Massage Therapist.

4. Stay focused on the present

It’s so easy to be focusing our energy on what “might” happen. You know the thoughts I am referring to. “What if” this and “what if” that.  It’s not conducive to place yourself far into the future constantly. Stay focused on “now”.

As luck would have it, if you think about “what ifs” all the time, then your subconscious has no choice but to respond to those thoughts and bring them to you.

If you struggle with this, then I recommend that you program your clock to bleep every hour or two and when it does it can be a reminder to refocus your energy on the present. Breaking up your unenthusiastic thought patterns is one of the most influential methods used by highly successful people.

5. Your mind is your best asset to your massage business

Always build on your knowledge base and skills. The last thing you want to be doing at times like these, is nothing.

You may want to do a check each day by asking yourself:  “What skills can I refine?”, “What things do I need to improve and learn, or, relearn?”

“Who can teach me things I need to know to develop my marketing or client retention strategies?”

If you look at the most successful massage therapist who continue to thrive, the one common trait they all have is the belief that they have FULL responsibility for their success.

We live in a time with access to amazing technology and a plethora of successful role models. Start by tapping into your natural abilities and take action towards resilience and resourcefulness.
